The first thing you notice isn’t the car — it’s the family. Lucas Freeman leans on the fender of his ’65 Ford Galaxie, kids Elianna (4) and Fletcher (2) orbiting around him like they own the place. The Galaxie wears its age honestly, a layer of sun-baked Kentucky patina that looks right at home among the shiny paint jobs at Ford Fest.
Lucas is from Scottsville, just thirty minutes over the hill from Beech Bend Raceway, so this wasn’t a cross-country trek — but don’t mistake this for a “car show only” cruiser. “I’ve probably done at least 20,000 this year,” Lucas said, matter-of-factly. “It’s basically my daily driver.”
The Galaxie started life with a 352, but when that engine started to feel tired, Lucas decided it was time for an upgrade. “I put a 390 in it. Added bug racks, gave it a little flare, and left the original paint.”
Under the hood sits a four-barrel Holley carburetor — nothing fancy, just the kind of bolt-on that keeps an old Ford happily fed. “Big fan of the four-barrel Holley,” Lucas said. “It just works.”

My old man ran up on a Facebook Marketplace ad for this car early in the week. A 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with the original 390 4bl engine and 4 speed in a odd color we had not seen.

The more we researched, the more it was clear he had to get this car. I did some digging on my end to figure more out on the color from an original 1966 Ford sales book. This color was a Thunderbird only color, so it was for sure special ordered. Sapphire blue. There are very few of these in the internet.

I talked to the owner around lunch Friday to hash out the plans. He broke the news that the front wheel had fell off going like 10mph when he took someone for a test drive a couple days ago. He was bummed, and sent us photos of the damage.

This kind of news would deter most, but we knew what he had was special and also knew its fairly easy to snag another one. It also is a nice price bargaining chip.

These pulled from a car, not running, and torn into pieces can go for around $1000. This one is dolled up, rebuilt, and lots of upgrades. Peaked our interest, but knew this was most likely a 2k to 3k build and not something we would snag. We finally sorted all the details out with the seller and went to get a local auto hauler with about 10 minutes to spare before they closed. We headed out from U-Haul around 6p CST Friday and planned to drive to Morgantown WV to get a few hours sleep from Bowling Green KY. After dinner and gas stops we made it to the hotel around 3a EST.

We both got around 3 hours sleep, then continued the trek to Laurel, MD Due to needing a notary for out of state vehicles, and it being Saturday, we had a tight schedule.  We made it to the seller's house around 11:30a EST Saturday. Nearly his entire properly was fenced in by a patchwork fence.  After chatting with him, checking the car out, and getting on a similar page, we looked at the extra engine. He pulled out a 4 speed toploader, a rear end, and a bundle of parts. After it was all said and done, Dad bought it all for what the car price was. Seller needed to clean out due to retiring to Florida.

On the way home, I dropped in on my coworker who lived 30 min from the car. Had a chance to checkout his project truck too.

I made it home around 3:30a Sunday. 1400 miles, 35 hours later, and a walking zombie.
Now its prep time to get our cars ready for the Holley FordFest coming in a couple weeks! I told dad to throw a band aid sticker on the fender for now and call it good.

Dad and I set out at 9a Sunday from U-hual to pick up a parts car for our other projects. After the frame and front windshield.

We made it to the guys house at 2:30p I crawled under the car to check the frame and its pristine. Windshield was also perfect. Paid him $600 with a smile.

Took us almost 3 hours to get this turd on the trailer. Rear end was completely locked up and that makes it pretty tricky to load one, even with the 5k winch we had it was a task. At the end we snagged the seller to use his tractor to get the rear end on the trailer better.

Done and on the road. We were about 4 hours from home, ETA was ~ 930p

Stopped at Buccee's to fill up and check everything. Seemed to be set

We made it about 45 minutes before one of the U-Haul tires completely imploded. Luckily we were able to get off at a exit and off the road

No biggie, U-hual offers roadside assistance (it was in fact a biggie) 2 hours later roadside reached us

He worked for about 20 minutes then told us, \"Oops I grabbed the wrong size tire, I have to go back to the shop\" 🤦 Asked him how long that would be and he said, \"40 minutes tops.\" Since we were kinda SOL, we set and wait. Road side dude left his expensive airjack and all under the trailer so we figured he'd come back....right....? He did not in fact come back. Reached back out to U-Haul after another 2 hours and told them to figure it out. They had another one heading my way, but at least an hour out. Second roadside assistance dude pulls up. Super nice, on top of things, and done in like 7 minutes. We were finally back on the road. We yanked the car off the trailer at around 4a at my parents. I dropped off the U-Haul trailer with the sunrise around 530a

I pulled into my driveway at around 7a... While this was not an adventure I'd want to do again, stoked to have a pristine frame for my blue 2 door, 1966 Ford LTD!
